A 52-year-old trader, Adekunle Nureni, on Thursday appeared before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly obtaining five cows worth N771,000 from two men by false pretence
Nureni, whose address was not provided, is facing a four-count charge bordering on false pretences and stealing, to which he pleaded not guilty.
The prosecutor, Insp. Victor Eruada, told the court that the defendant committed the offences in August 2018, at Abattoir Market in Agege, Lagos State.
Eruada said that the defendant collected four cows worth N586, 000 from Alhaji Danburba Usman and another cow valued at N185,000 from Mr Sadal Maikudi.
He said that the defendant promised that he would pay their owners after he must have sold the cows.
Eruada said that the defendant, however, failed to give the complainants their money or their cows.
“The defendant swindled the complainants by failing to pay the proceeds from the sales of the cows or return the cows,’’ the prosecutor said.
He said that the offences contravened Sections 287 and 314 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 stipulates three years’ imprisonment, while Section 314 prescribes 15 years’ jail term for obtaining under false pretences.
The chief magistrate, Mrs M.I. Dan-Oni, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.
Dan-Oni adjourned the case until Jan. 23, 2020, for mention.
