The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has strengthened collaboration with stakeholders to curb vandalism and protect critical national infrastructure, particularly the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway.
The Lagos State Commandant of the corps, Adetoun Keshinro, disclosed this at a stakeholders’ engagement organised in collaboration with the Office of Infrastructure of the Federal Ministry of Works in Lagos on Tuesday.
Keshinro said the corps would engage market leaders, including chairmen of the Orile and Ladipo market associations, to discourage the sale of stolen government property and help tackle vandalism.
“We believe in engagement, and we are doing much of it. We believe that this issue will be brought to a halt,” he said.
The Chairman of the Scrap Dealers Association in Lagos State, Adetoun Adewale, said the meeting provided an opportunity for stakeholders to develop lasting solutions to infrastructure vandalism.
He warned that the destruction of critical assets endangered lives and disrupted public services, pledging cooperation to ensure offenders were brought to justice.
The engagement attracted representatives of the Federal Ministry of Works, Nigerian Communications Commission, Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps, vigilance groups, welders and scrap dealers.
Participants called for stronger community involvement, intelligence sharing and prompt reporting of suspicious activities to security agencies to protect public infrastructure.
