A mother and her child have died after two container-laden trucks overturned near Freeman Market along the Mile 2 corridor, inward Apapa, Lagos.
The incident, reported on October 26, 2026, left the victims trapped beneath the overturned trucks and their cargo.
According to reports attributed to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), both victims sustained fatal injuries. Their remains were subsequently taken to the police mortuary in Yaba.
Following the crash, LASTMA officials secured the area and diverted traffic through an adjoining service lane to reduce congestion and prevent further accidents.
Recovery operations were carried out with a crane and a heavy-duty tow vehicle to remove the overturned trucks and containers, while security personnel helped manage the scene.
The cause of the accident had not been established at the time of reporting, as further investigation was expected.
The tragedy has renewed concerns about the dangers posed by heavy-duty vehicles on Lagos roads, particularly along freight routes connecting the city’s ports.
It also highlights the importance of proper vehicle maintenance, safe cargo loading and strict enforcement of road safety regulations to reduce preventable road accidents.
