The Federal Government has intensified public health measures following the confirmation of an Ebola virus disease (EVD) case in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Tuesday.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs disclosed this in a statement issued by its spokesperson, Oluwafemi Adeniyi, on Thursday.
According to Adeniyi, the patient is a woman who recently arrived in Nigeria on an international flight from Uganda.
He said she was admitted to a private hospital in the FCT, where she received medical care for several days before the diagnosis was confirmed. The patient is currently in isolation and receiving treatment.
The government, through the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), is working with the FCT Health Services Secretariat to contain the infection and prevent further transmission.
Adeniyi said contact tracing had commenced, with 44 close contacts identified for monitoring and appropriate public health follow-up.
Response teams are working to identify and monitor individuals who may have been exposed to the virus, including healthcare workers, patients, caregivers and people linked to the patient’s travel.
He added that the government was coordinating surveillance, laboratory testing and other response activities in line with established public health protocols.
The measures are aimed at identifying potential cases early, strengthening infection prevention and control, and reducing the risk of further transmission.
The spokesperson urged the public to remain calm, avoid speculation and misinformation, and follow advisories issued by relevant health authorities.
He also encouraged Nigerians to rely on verified information from official government channels.
Adeniyi reaffirmed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ commitment to working with relevant national institutions and other stakeholders in supporting the coordinated response. He said further updates would be provided through official channels as verified information became available.
