Seven people have died and 11 others sustained injuries in a multiple-vehicle crash along Gombe-Billiri Road in Gombe State.

The state Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Samson Kaura, said the crash involving eight vehicles occurred at about 5:30 p.m. on Thursday at Tashan Magariya Junction, Kumo, in Akko Local Government Area.

He said 25 people were involved in the crash, comprising 14 adult males, three adult females and eight children.

According to him, 11 victims sustained injuries, including compound fractures, lacerations and bruises. All those involved were taken to public hospitals in Kumo for medical examination and treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited in hospital mortuaries.

Kaura explained that a DAF trailer travelling from Gombe to Yola lost control due to brake failure, ran into two Volkswagen Golf cars and subsequently crashed into five motorcycles, killing seven people and injuring 11 others.

He advised motorists to inspect their vehicles before travelling and observe speed limits, particularly in built-up areas and along busy roads, to reduce the severity of crashes.

He also urged authorities and other stakeholders to consider relocating markets situated along highways or fencing them off to prevent traders and pedestrians from moving directly onto the roads.

The FRSC commander called for the provision of safe pedestrian crossings, including footbridges, and urged pedestrians to use them when crossing highways.

He further advised motorcycle operators to avoid parking along roadsides, especially on market days when traffic and pedestrian activities increase.

Kaura recommended designated motorcycle parking areas within motor parks or other safe locations away from highways, stressing that roadside parking exposes operators and other road users to serious risks.

He urged motorists, motorcycle operators, traders, pedestrians and relevant authorities to take road safety measures seriously to prevent further crashes and protect lives.
