The Police command in Anambra has detained a 20-year-old man, Pascal Ogbogu, for allegedly murdering his 56-year-old father in Abatete.
The police said the incident occurred on the evening of Tuesday, Aug. 25, in Abatete, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday in Awka.
Ikenga said the suspect allegedly attacked his father with a machete before fleeing the scene after the incident.
“Preliminary information revealed that, on the evening of Aug. 25, the suspect allegedly attacked his father and fled the scene,” he said.
He said police operatives from Eziowelle Police Division mobilised after receiving a distress report, alongside family members and Abatete Vigilance personnel.
According to him, the responders found the deceased’s lifeless body in a pool of blood, with a deep machete wound to the throat.
“The body was subsequently evacuated to the mortuary for preservation and autopsy,” Ikenga said.
The PPRO said coordinated efforts by police and community members led to Ogbogu’s arrest during the early hours of Wednesday, Aug. 26.
He said timely information and cooperation from community members assisted security operatives in tracking and locating the fleeing suspect.
The Anambra Commissioner of Police, Nnanna Ama, commended the family, community members, police personnel and vigilance operatives for their prompt response.
Ama also emphasised the importance of community participation and timely information sharing in effective policing and protecting lives and property.
The CP commiserated with the deceased’s family and directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department.
He said the transfer would enable further investigation and a comprehensive review of the circumstances surrounding the alleged murder.
Ama said the investigation would establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure all relevant facts were properly determined.
He assured the family and the public that the investigation would be conducted professionally, thoroughly and diligently.
The CP said the suspect would face due process upon conclusion of the investigation.
