Argentine striker Julián Álvarez has declared his desire to leave Atlético Madrid to “fulfill my dream” at FC Barcelona.
But the forward’s proposed move to Camp Nou has hit a major wall as the Atlético board firmly blocks negotiations.
At just 26 years old, Álvarez already boasts one of the most decorated trophy cabinets in world football. The forward holds the distinction of being the first player in football history to win a continental Treble and the FIFA World Cup in the exact same season.
Álvarez joined Atlético Madrid on August 12, 2024, completing his arrival from Manchester City. The deal was structured as a blockbuster package worth up to €95 million (€75 million guaranteed initial fee plus €20 million in performance add-ons), making him Manchester City’s record player sale and the second-most expensive signing in Atlético’s history.
Despite making a significant impact in the Spanish capital, the World Cup winner is now seeking a fresh challenge at Camp Nou as Barcelona president Joan Laporta takes direct charge of negotiations.
Reflecting on his future, Álvarez made his intentions clear:
”I spoke with the people at the club I needed to speak with. The best thing for everyone is a transfer, and I want to fulfill my dream.”
Despite Barcelona submitting proposals worth over €100 million, Atlético Madrid remain resolute in their stance. The Madrid club’s leadership has pointed to Álvarez’s €500 million exit clause, refusing to sell their star forward to a direct La Liga rival.
