The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ebonyi State Council, has congratulated Mr Tony Nwizi, immediate past state chairman of the union on his appointment as Director-General of Ebonyi Broadcasting Corporation (EBBC).

In a statement signed by Mr Samson Nwafor, Chairman of NUJ on Thursday in Abakaliki, the union described the appointment of Nwizi as ‘deserving’ and putting a square peg in a square hole.

The union, while felicitating with its former chairman for his new appointment, commended Gov. Francis Nwifuru for choosing a seasoned broadcaster to head the state-owned media outfit.

“I heartily congratulate the immediate past Chairman of the NUJ, Ebonyi State Council, Mr Anthony Nwizi on his meritorious appointment as Director -General Ebonyi Broadcasting Corporation (EBBC) by His Excellency, Gov. Francis Nwifuru.

“The appointment of Nwizi is well deserved having risen from the ranks as a member of staff of the corporation; I do not doubt that he will bring his many years of experience in the media industry to bear in the discharge of his new assignment.

“It is pertinent to note that this is the first time an employee of the corporation is being appointed as the DG.

“This is why we are very confident that this appointment will bring the desired positive change in the corporation.

“I sincerely thank the governor for not only taking this bold decision but for always believing in the youths by appointing them into sensitive positions.

“I call on members of NUJ and indeed, the entire staff of the corporation to give the new DG, who is our own, the maximum cooperation to bring the desired positive change to the Corporation,” the statement read.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that EBBC, established in 1996 after the creation of the state is a radio and television service owned by the state government.

It existed as Ebonyi Cable Television  (ECTV) and Ebonyi Broadcasting Service (EBS) before merging to become EBBC under former Gov. Martin Elechi.

NAN also recalls that Nwizi is the third substantive DG of EBBC after Mr Frank Onwuanibe and Chief Timothy Nwachi.

Nwizi who was serving his second tenure as the chairman of NUJ was first appointed Special Assistant to the governor on Information Communication Technology (ICT) before his latest appointment.
