Police in Oyo State have arrested a 49-year-old security guard for allegedly shooting a resident at Zion Estate, Akobo, Ibadan.

The police also recovered four locally made single-barrel guns and a machete from the suspect.

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, said the incident occurred at about 4 a.m. on Tuesday when the victim, Bolaji Oladipupo, went outside to pump water and heard a siren near his house.

According to preliminary investigations, Oladipupo went outside to check the noise and identified himself as a resident but was allegedly shot by the security guard.

Police operatives from Akobo Division arrested the suspect, who reportedly confessed to the shooting. A search of his duty post led to the recovery of two serviceable and two unserviceable locally made guns, as well as a machete.

Ayanlade said the victim was receiving medical attention and responding to treatment. He added that investigators were working to establish what led to the shooting and how the suspect came to possess the firearms.

The police urged private security personnel to remain professional, disciplined and restrained while carrying out their duties.

The Commissioner of Police, Abimbola Olugbenga, has directed a thorough investigation into the incident and appropriate action in accordance with the law.
