The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Gombe State recorded an 88.9 per cent decrease in road crash deaths between July and September 2026.

The Sector Commander, Mr Samson Kaura, disclosed this on Wednesday while reviewing the corps’ operations for the third quarter of the year.

Kaura said four people died in road crashes during the period, compared with 36 deaths recorded in 57 crashes in the second quarter, representing an 88.9 per cent decline in fatalities.

He said the number of crashes also fell from 57 in the second quarter to 44 in the period under review, while fatalities declined by 73 per cent compared with the same period in 2025.

According to him, the reduction was attributed to sustained awareness campaigns, collaboration with relevant stakeholders and effective emergency response services.

“In the third quarter of 2026, we recorded 44 road crashes involving 41 vehicles, including 27 bicycles, motorcycles and tricycles.

“A total of 210 persons were involved, four deaths, 145 injuries and 61 others were unhurt.”

Kaura identified speeding, overtaking and overloading as suspected causes of the crashes.

He urged stakeholders to sustain road safety campaigns in their communities and advised drivers to comply with speed limits.

“Speed needs to be controlled before it controls us, kill the speed before it kills us. Speed thrills, but it kills.

“Avoid speed and maintain the speed limit as prescribed by the law,” he said.

Kaura said the corps would intensify sensitisation activities in the fourth quarter to promote compliance with traffic rules and further reduce road crashes.
