Singer/songwriter, Celine Dion, has returned to the stage for her first full concert in more than six years, bringing an emotional end to a difficult period in which a rare neurological illness forced her away from live performances.
The Canadian singer performed before about 30,000 fans at the Plenitude Arena in Nanterre, near Paris, on Saturday, September 12.
She became emotional shortly after beginning the concert, which marked the opening of her 26-show Paris residency.
Dion’s long break from the stage began during a difficult period for the singer.
Her touring plans were first affected by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.
Two years later, she revealed that she had been diagnosed with stiff-person syndrome (SPS), a rare and incurable neurological disorder.
The condition can cause severe muscle stiffness and painful spasms. In Dion’s case, it also affected her ability to sing and perform.
She was forced to cancel shows and put her career on hold while she concentrated on managing the illness.
Her struggle was later shown in the 2024 documentary I Am: Celine Dion, which gave fans a closer look at the physical challenges she faced.
Despite the difficulties, Dion repeatedly expressed her determination to return to the stage.
Her comeback finally arrived in Paris.
She opened the concert with her French-language song, On ne change pas and later performed some of her biggest hits, including My Heart Will Go On, The Power of Love and All By Myself.
At several points, Dion became emotional while speaking to the audience.
She thanked her fans for their patience and support and said she had promised herself that she would return.
The performance was also a test of how far she had recovered.
Her voice was not exactly as it was before her illness, but she completed the full show and received a huge response from the audience.
Dion’s return is more than just another concert. After years of uncertainty about whether she would be able to perform again, the 58-year-old singer has shown that she is ready to face the stage once more.
For the fans who waited years to see her again, Saturday’s concert was a celebration of music, resilience and a promise finally kept.
