Nigerian cinemas welcomed a new release today as Sweet 16, an experimental musical comedy-drama from filmmaker Willis Ikedum, opened nationwide across Nigeria and West Africa, distributed by FilmOne Entertainment.
The film centers on a privileged, outspoken 16 year-old girl, played by newcomer Daisy Eugene, whose plans for a lavish birthday celebration unravel when she stumbles upon uncomfortable truths about her family’s finances, including her father’s faked wealth and her mother’s hidden life.
Shot primarily in Port Harcourt and produced by Wheels Pictures, the film mixes comedy and musical numbers to explore themes of family, class and coming of age a story Nollywood has rarely told through this lens.
Written and directed by Ikedum, an award-winning filmmaker whose earlier work has screened at the Toronto International Film Festival and the BFI London Film Festival, Sweet 16 boasts a star-heavy cast list: Mercy Aigbe, Alexx Ekubo, Yemi Alade, Denrele Edun, Uche Jombo, Kalu Ikeagwu, Samuel “Broda Shaggi” Perry, Julius Agwu, Angel Unigwe and Chief Imo, among others.
The release carries an added emotional charge for Nollywood audiences: it is the last film completed by actor Alexx Ekubo before his death, lending the lighthearted premise an unexpected layer of poignancy.
Ahead of today’s nationwide debut, the production held a premiere in Lagos that drew a mix of established actors, teenage performers, TikTok personalities and other entertainment figures.
Speaking at the event, co-star Mercy Aigbe said the story resonated with her personally as the mother of a 16-year-old son, adding that the film speaks to a younger demographic she feels Nollywood has often overlooked.
Singer Yemi Alade, appearing in one of her rare screen roles since her 2019 acting debut, helped promote the film online, teasing it as “the biggest surprise of this summer.” Sweet 16 opens a packed run of Nollywood theatrical releases this month.
It will be followed on August 21 by Ikenga: The Last Festival, Aláhùn, Abujaa and A Father’s Secret, before the historical epic King Kosoko: The Battle for Lagos arrives August 28,bmaking this one of the industry’s busiest theatrical stretches of the year.
