Nigeria’s non-oil exports get a $120m boost

Nigeria’s non-oil export sector has recorded a $120 million boost, with five major companies accounting for nearly 30 per cent of the earnings generated by the country’s top 100 non-oil exporters.

The performance highlights the growing contribution of large Nigerian businesses to export earnings beyond crude oil, as the country continues efforts to diversify its sources of foreign exchange.

Stronger non-oil exports could provide Nigeria with additional foreign currency while supporting domestic production, industrial activity and employment across key sectors of the economy.

Companies operating across major productive sectors are driving the export performance, with Dangote Fertiliser among the leading contributors.

Their combined contribution underscores the growing role of large-scale manufacturers and producers in Nigeria’s drive to expand its non-oil export base.

The figures also point to an opportunity to broaden the country’s export capacity beyond the leading companies.

If more Nigerian producers can expand from serving the domestic market to competing in international markets, the momentum in non-oil exports could support higher foreign-exchange earnings and contribute to industrial expansion.

For Nigeria, sustained growth in non oil exports could therefore become an important part of efforts to build a more diversified economy and reduce reliance on petroleum-related earnings.
