The former Spanish international midfielder Ignacio Camacho has ended his playing career after a two-year fight against injury and will take up a traineeship with Wolfsburg, the Bundesliga club said Monday.
The 30-year-old Camacho has had five foot operations since playing his last match for Wolfsburg in September 2018.
“My foot has said enough,” Camacho told a press conference. “After some time to reflect and many conversations with my doctors is time to say goodbye.
“I have done everything to been able to play on.”
Camacho came through the Atletico Madrid youth system and won the Europa League with the club in 2010.
He joined Wolfsburg in 2017 after a six-year stint with Malaga.
His two-year trainee programme at Wolfsburg will see him spend time in various departments to learn how the club works.
