Nigeria’s Flamingos defeated Puerto Rico 2-0 on Tuesday to secure their first victory in the ongoing FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco and keep their hopes of reaching the knockout stage alive.
After losing their opening Group B match 2-1 to Poland, the Nigerian team took the lead in the 25th minute through Oluwakemi Adegbuyi, who finished Queen Joseph’s precise pass.
The Flamingos continued to search for a second goal, with Joseph, Tosin Rafiu and Favour Nwakocha coming close but failing to convert their chances.
Nigeria eventually doubled their lead in the 90th minute when Precious Oscar headed home a cross from Adegbuyi.
The victory moved Nigeria into second place in Group B, ahead of Poland on goal difference. Poland had earlier suffered a 6-1 defeat to defending champions North Korea.
The Flamingos will face North Korea on Friday, hoping to secure a place in the knockout stage of the tournament.
