What is in a name, and what is in the meaning of a name?
These are among the two questions that a couple and the relevant council registrars have had to face in recent days.
The parents, Dan and Mandy Sheldon, decided to name their son ‘Lucifer’, often associated with the biblical Devil, saying they do not believe in the demon idea.
The council, however, insisted they couldn’t, thus sparking a dramatic battle.
According to reports, the parents eventually won the battle as, first, they said they were not religion people. The second reason is more dramatic: they said, in Greek, ‘Lucifer’ means something positive, which is ‘Light-bringer’.
Dan, a plant hire company boss, said, “We were really excited to go and get him registered but the woman looked at us in utter disgust.
“She told us he would never be able to get a job, and that teachers wouldn’t want to teach him.
“I tried to explain that we are not religious people, and Lucifer in Greek means ‘light-bringer’ and ‘morning’ but she wouldn’t listen.
“She even told us that it was illegal to name a child that in New Zealand and that maybe we could name him something else but refer to him as Lucifer at home.”
Apart from the fact that the authorities eventually obliged them, they went ahead to apologize should they feel offended.
