A housewife, Aisha Abdullahi, has dragged her husband, Salisu Muhammad, before an Upper Sharia Court sitting at Rijiyar Zaki in Kano State, seeking dissolution of their one-year-old marriage over alleged neglect.
Appearing through her counsel, Abdullahi Sha’aibu-Fagge, the petitioner offered to return N50,000—representing half of the N100,000 bride price paid by her husband—under Khul’i to secure the divorce, stating that she no longer loved him.
Addressing the petitioner’s absence, Sha’aibu-Fagge explained that his client was recovering at home after allegedly being beaten by her husband’s relatives. He told the court that the assault re-opened stitches from a surgical operation she underwent during childbirth, leaving her unable to attend proceedings in person.
In response, the husband refused to grant the divorce unless his wife pays him N10 million in compensation to marry another wife, alongside an extra N500,000 he claimed to have spent on her wedding attire.
The petitioner’s counsel rejected the monetary demands, noting that the union had already produced a child.
Presiding judge Malam Halhalatul Kuza’i-Zakariyya ordered the respondent to submit a detailed written breakdown of his marriage expenses at the next sitting and adjourned the matter until November 10 for continuation of hearing.
