The United Kingdom has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening defence and security cooperation with Nigeria, focusing on military training, technology transfer and institutional capacity building.

The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Pete Vowles, gave the assurance during a visit to the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, at the Defence Headquarters in Abuja.

Vowles described defence cooperation as a key part of the longstanding relationship between both countries and expressed the UK’s readiness to sustain existing security initiatives and explore new areas of collaboration to address emerging threats.

He also stressed the importance of a mutually beneficial partnership to promote regional stability and strengthen Nigeria’s capacity to tackle security challenges.

In response, Oluyede highlighted the countries’ longstanding defence ties and called for expanded cooperation in professional military education, technology transfer and institutional development.

He said existing defence agreements and training programmes had improved the professional competence and operational capabilities of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.

The defence chief added that continued collaboration with international partners was essential to addressing emerging threats, promoting self-reliance and strengthening the military’s operational efficiency.

Both sides expressed optimism about the future of the partnership and pledged to build on existing achievements while exploring further areas of cooperation.
