German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul is scheduled to hold talks with Slovakia’s leadership on Tuesday as part of his multi-day tour of Europe.
In Bratislava, Wadephul is due to meet Prime Minister Robert Fico and Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár, among others.
The talks are expected to focus on Slovakia’s obligations and responsibilities as a member of the European Union and NATO, particularly regarding support for Ukraine and relations with Russia.
Slovakia’s government has frequently criticised EU sanctions against Moscow and adopted a more Russia-friendly position than many of the country’s EU and NATO partners.
Wadephul is also scheduled to visit Strasbourg, where he will address the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and meet representatives of the organisation.
According to the German Foreign Office, he will emphasise Germany’s commitment to protecting and strengthening human rights, the rule of law and democracy.
Germany is one of the Council of Europe’s largest bilateral donors.
