Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk has revealed how a ten-second conversation with new Dutch head coach Xavi erased all doubts about his international future following post-World Cup retirement speculation.
The 35-year-old Liverpool center-back took time off with his family before deciding whether to extend his national team career. However, meeting with Xavi immediately settled the decision.
Van Dijk admitted that after taking a vacation, a brief conversation with Xavi made his choice clear:
“I needed a holiday with my family, then time to talk with Xavi… and after ten seconds, it was clear I’d carry on.”
What Xavi Told Him: When asked what the newly appointed Dutch manager said to convince him so quickly, Van Dijk shared:
“What did he say? That I’m Virgil van Dijk! It is about trust, appreciation, and how important you are for the team.”
Xavi has confirmed that Van Dijk will remain the leader and official captain of Oranje as they prepare for their upcoming fixtures.
