The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Ondo State Chapter, has honoured 50 sports personalities, administrators, athletes, media organisations and institutions for their contributions to sports development.
The awardees were recognised at the “Ondo 50 Sports Icons Award” held in Akure on Wednesday as part of activities marking the 50th anniversary of the state’s creation.
Those honoured included former Governor Olusegun Mimiko, former Nigeria Premier Football League Chairman Gbenga Elegbeleye, former Ondo State Football Agency Chairman Akinsola Akinbobola and Ondo State Football Association Chairman Dele Ajayi.
Former athletes and coaches, including Seun Ogunkoya, Adura Olalehin, Odunayo Adekuoroye, Godfrey Oboabona, Joe Aribo, Rasheedat Ajibade and Chukwuma Akabueze, were also recognised.
Institutions honoured included OSRC Media Group, Ondo State Printing and Publishing Corporation, Federal University of Technology, Akure and Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko.
SWAN State Chairman, Segun Giwa, said the initiative was aimed at preserving the history of sports in Ondo State while recognising the contributions of individuals and institutions.
He called for increased investment in grassroots sports, functional facilities, competent coaches, regular competitions and improved welfare and medical support for athletes.
Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, represented by his Chief Press Secretary, Ebenezer Adeniyan, said the state government was ready to partner with SWAN to promote sports.
The Chairman of the occasion, Olabiyi Poroye, said sports could promote youth development, social integration, employment and economic empowerment.
The awardees expressed appreciation to SWAN for recognising their contributions to sports development in the state.
