Oluwole Seun, a final-year student in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has allegedly died by suicide.
The motive behind the incident remains unknown, as close friends reportedly observed no unusual behaviour before his death.
The university’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Wednesday, September 16, 2026.
According to the statement, the university management received an emergency report at about 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 15, 2026.
The incident occurred at an off-campus apartment in the Damico area of Ooni Layout, Ile-Ife.
Olarewaju said OAU’s Quick Response and Security (QRS) Team was dispatched to the scene alongside officers from the Moore ‘A’ Division of the Nigeria Police Force after the report was received.
He said the student was taken to the University Health Centre, where a medical doctor pronounced him dead on arrival.
The university management expressed deep concern over the incident, adding that items and information recovered from the scene had been handed over to the police, who had launched an investigation.
The university’s Student Affairs authorities were also notified to provide welfare support to affected students.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, extended his condolences to the family, friends and classmates of the deceased.
He urged students experiencing emotional distress, academic pressure or personal difficulties to seek assistance through the university’s official support structures.
“No student should feel that he or she has to confront overwhelming difficulties alone,” he said.
The university urged members of the community to remain calm and refrain from spreading unverified information while the police investigation continues.
