The Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) defeated the Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria (PMAN) 3-1 to win the fifth edition of the Mayor’s Unity Cup in Abuja.
The 2026 edition of the annual novelty football match was held on Wednesday as part of activities marking International Actors Day.
The match brought together entertainers from the music and film industries in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), with both teams battling for victory.
Speaking on the tournament, Salma Aminu, Mayor of the AGN Abuja chapter, said the annual competition was aimed at promoting unity and encouraging physical fitness among entertainers.
“There is no loser and there is no winner. The Mayor’s Cup has come to stay.
“It is a way of bringing all the entertainers in Abuja together, and it is part of AGN’s health and fitness initiatives for members,” she said.
Aminu said the tournament had previously featured various associations and football clubs, including the police, comedians and other entertainers, as part of efforts to use football to foster unity among industry stakeholders.
She added that organising the tournament was one of the responsibilities of successive mayors of the AGN FCT chapter.
“Any mayor that comes on board already knows that this is part of their primary assignment, to make sure that this Mayor’s Cup is held,” she said.
Also speaking, the Governor of the PMAN FCT chapter, Michael Oyibo, said the tournament provided an opportunity to showcase Abuja’s entertainment industry.
“The synergy among the entertainers is very important to us, and apart from that, we believe in physical fitness as celebrities,” Oyibo said.
In his remarks, Holy-Steve Ogbuefi, Chairman of the Directors Guild of Nigeria (DGN), FCT Zone, described the tournament as a rallying point for entertainers across different professional groups.
“Whether you’re a musician, whether you’re an actor, whether you’re a director, producer, we are one. It’s just one Nigerian entertainment,” Ogbuefi said.
He commended the AGN for sustaining the Mayor’s Cup, saying such activities would strengthen the bond, love and togetherness within the entertainment industry.
