The Nigerian Navy has arrested a wanted militant kingpin in Bayelsa State during an intelligence-led operation carried out in collaboration with local security personnel.
The suspect was arrested following credible intelligence on his continued movement and activities after he reportedly fled during a raid on his camp at Fununu Community on Aug. 6.
The Commanding Officer, Capt. Sunday Haruna, said the operation also triggered a pursuit of other suspected associates who fled into surrounding bushes, with some believed to have sustained gunshot wounds.
He said the operation led to the recovery of an AK-47 rifle, three loaded magazines and a mobile phone.
Haruna said the suspect and his second-in-command confessed during interrogation to terrorising, kidnapping and, in some cases, killing residents of neighbouring communities.
He described the arrest as a major step in efforts to dismantle militant networks and restore peace and security in the area.
Haruna said the suspects remained in custody for further investigation and interrogation, while search operations continued to apprehend other fleeing suspects.
