One day, two moods: Funke Akindele celebrates 49 as Nollywood bids Ogogo farewell
Nollywood actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele has faced criticism from some social media users after sharing birthday posts on Monday, August 24, the same day veteran actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, was laid to rest in Ilaro, Ogun State.
Akindele, who turned 49, had earlier acknowledged Ogogo’s death in a post on her X page, expressing her condolences following the veteran actor’s passing.
However, her subsequent birthday posts drew criticism from some social media users, who questioned the timing of the celebration as the Yoruba film industry was still mourning the loss of one of its veterans.
Some users argued that she could have toned down her public celebration or postponed it out of respect for the late actor, who died on Sunday, August 23, and was buried the following day.
Others, however, defended Akindele, arguing that her birthday was a personal milestone and that celebrating another year of life did not necessarily amount to disrespect for the deceased.
The reactions have therefore centred largely on the timing and manner of Akindele’s birthday celebration, rather than an absence of acknowledgement of Ogogo’s death.
