The arrest of luxury dealer and social media personality Afolabi Kazeem Michael, popularly known as KC Luxury, has not only stirred the Nigerian entertainment space but also turned attention to the extravagant lifestyle he has long displayed online.
KC Luxury was arrested by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, on 13 August, after the agency said he was preparing to travel to Paris.
His arrest followed the seizure of 184.50 kilogrammes of cocaine, which the NDLEA said was linked to an alleged international trafficking network with an estimated street value of about ₦39 billion.
But beyond the shocking drug allegation, Nigerians have been having a field day in the comment sections of blogs reporting the development.
KC Luxury has built a social media persona around luxury, regularly showing off exotic cars, expensive jewellery, designer items and other symbols of wealth.
Now, following his arrest, some social media users have returned to those old posts with a rather cheeky question: “So where did all the luxury come from?” The comment sections of several entertainment blogs have been filled with humorous remarks, with some users jokingly connecting his extravagant displays of wealth to the allegations now levelled against him.
Others have simply treated the situation as an unexpected twist to the lifestyle he had made so familiar online. The NDLEA, however, has made more serious allegations.
The agency said its investigation identified KC Luxury as the alleged Nigerian “arrowhead” of a cocaine trafficking syndicate operating across several countries.
According to the agency, the syndicate allegedly moved cocaine from South America through Nigeria to destinations in Europe and Asia. A search of KC Luxury’s apartment in Banana Island, Lagos, reportedly also led to the recovery of exotic vehicles.
Cash in different currencies and expensive jewellery were also allegedly recovered from him at the airport.
While the online jokes continue to pour in, it is important to note that the allegations against KC Luxury have not been proven in court.
For now, the man whose social media pages once offered followers a front-row seat to a life of luxury has found himself at the centre of a very different kind of public attention.
