Switzerland secured a place in the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a convincing 2-0 victory over Algeria in their Round of 32 clash.
The Swiss side made a bright start and took the lead in the 10th minute through Breel Embolo, who finished from a pass by Johan Manzambi.
Switzerland controlled much of the first half with disciplined defending and effective possession, while Algeria struggled to create clear-cut chances.
Farid Chaibi was booked in the 36th minute as Algeria searched for a way back into the contest.
Switzerland doubled their advantage immediately after the break when Dan Ndoye found the net in the 46th minute to put his side firmly in control.
Algeria responded with changes in the 58th minute, introducing Jaouen Hadjam for Houssem Aouar and Amine Gouiri for Ramiz Zerrouki in a bid to strengthen the attack.
Switzerland also made substitutions in the 71st minute, bringing on Fabian Rieder for Ruben Vargas and Noah Okafor for Johan Manzambi.
At the same time, Algeria introduced Anis Hadj Moussa for Riyad Mahrez and Hicham Boudaoui for Nabil Bentaleb.
Boudaoui was shown a yellow card a minute later as Algeria continued to push forward in search of a goal.
Algeria made another change in the 82nd minute, with Adil Boulbina replacing Rayan Belghali, while Switzerland brought on Zeki Amdouni for Embolo in the 83rd minute.
The Swiss side made two further substitutions in the 87th minute as Silvan Widmer replaced Denis Zakaria and Michel Aebischer came on for Ndoye to help see out the victory.
Switzerland’s disciplined defending, tactical organisation and clinical finishing proved decisive as they sealed a deserved 2-0 win.
Algeria showed determination throughout the contest but were unable to break down the Swiss defence, bringing their World Cup campaign to an end at the Round of 32 stage.
