Nigeria has been re-elected to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Public Key Directory (PKD) Board for a sixth consecutive term.
A statement by the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) Spokesman, Mr Akinsola Akinlabi, on Wednesday in Abuja stated that the re-election took place during the 31st ICAO-PKD Board Meeting held in Montreal, Canada.
Akinlabi said that the Comptroller-General, NIS, Mrs Kemi Nandap, led Nigeria’s delegation to the election, where the country secured the position through its consistent contributions to the ICAO-PKD system.
According to him, Nigeria’s success was driven by its shared implementation experiences and innovations in Public Key Infrastructure (PKI).
This, he said included electronic Machine-Readable Travel Document (eMRTD) verification, and digital identity harmonisation.
“Nigeria has been a member of the ICAO-PKD since 2009 and has played a key role in shaping the directory’s strategic development and modernisation over the years.
“The re-election is a recognition of Nigeria’s technical expertise, regulatory compliance and sustained commitment to ICAO’s Standards and Recommended Practices.
“With this development, Nigeria retains its place among the 15-member ICAO-PKD Board, drawn from 107 participating states worldwide,” he said.
Akinlabi noted that the achievement further underscored Nigeria’s growing influence in global aviation security and travel document integrity.
He added that the development also reaffirmed the Service’s commitment to the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu.
This, he said, was particularly in the area of meeting Nigeria’s international obligations and strengthening the country’s presence in global governance platforms.
He reiterated the service’s resolve to continue upholding the highest standards of border security, advancing digital identity initiatives, and safeguarding the integrity of travel documents issued to Nigerians and residents.
