Renowned historian and culture promoter, Professor Siyan Oyeweso, dies at 64

The arts and culture community has lost a leading figure, Professor Abdugafar Siyan Oyeweso.

Oyeweso, who was the Chairman of the Council and Pro-Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, died today December 2, 2025 at the age of 64.

This is contained in a statement issued by Olawale Oyeweso, on behalf of the family, and made available to newsmen on Tuesday in Ile-Ife.

Oyeweso said that the Professor of History died at a hospital after undergoing a successful surgery this morning.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father and brother, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.

“Prof. Abdulgafar Siyan Oyeweso, departed this life on Tuesday, Dec. 2nd at the age of 64 after a brief illness.

“He is a renowned professor of history, an educator and mentor, who touched the lives of countless students, colleagues and political associates among others.

“The departed scholar is survived by his wife, children and family members.

“His remains will be buried in his country home, Ede, by 4 p.m. today after solar Ashri,” Oyeweso said.
