The Kano State Government has donated 10 motorcycles to forest rangers at the Falgore Game Reserve to help with wildlife conservation in the state. The donation was announced by Governor Abba Kabir on thursday to commemorate World Rangers Day.
Speaking at the Falgore Base Camp in the Doguwa Local Government Area, the managing director of the Kano Zoological and Wildlife Management Agency (KAZOWMA), Conservator Sadiq Kura, who represented the governor, said the gesture highlights the government’s commitment to protecting the ecosystem and endangered species.
Kura described rangers as unsung heroes of conservation, noting that they risk their lives to combat tree felling and poaching while ensuring the protection of animal habitats.
“Our rangers are also the backbone of conservation efforts.
“Their work is critical to safeguard the planet’s natural heritage and we are committed to supporting their safety and welfare,” he said.
In her remarks, the Director of Zoo Services, Hajiya Hafsat Bello, said the event was an opportunity to honor rangers who protect wildlife and preserve ecosystems under difficult conditions.
“We also remember those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty,” she added.
The District Head of Doguwa, Alhaji Sarki Dankadai, lauded the support from the governor, adding that the reserve was crucial to residents as it feeds River Kano and Tiga Dam as well as serves as a major carbon sink.
Speaking on behalf of the rangers, Hisham Sulaiman, expressed appreciation to the government and KAZOWMA for prioritising their welfare.
He said the rangers had achieved progress in reducing illegal logging and poaching, as well as restoring degraded habitats.
