The Ediba community in the Abi local government area of Cross River has celebrated its 2025 New Yam Festival with a powerful message from its traditional ruler, who affirmed the deep cultural and communal significance of the yam. Speaking on Monday at the celebration, which had the theme “enduring peace for sustainable development,” his royal highness, Ovia Ejom Edward Ejom, stated that yam is not merely a food source but a symbol of the community’s strength, survival, and communal spirit.
While commending the local farmers, cultural groups, and festival organizers, the traditional ruler reinforced the idea that the future of the community is intrinsically linked to its cultural roots and dedication to agriculture. he urged the people to remember that “our strength comes from the land and the hands that work it.”
The festival, known locally as “rathobai,” serves as a reminder of the community’s dependence on the land and its collective effort, fostering a sense of gratitude and unity among the people of ediba.
She added that the festival drew visitors from across the country, boosted trade and provided platform for farmers and artisans to thrive.
