The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested 11 individuals, including seven Chinese nationals and four Nigerians, for suspected illegal mining in Akwa Ibom.

The EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, confirmed the arrests in a statement on Monday from the agency’s Uyo Zonal Directorate.

Oyewale said that the suspects were arrested on July 24, at Emem-Asuk in Eastern Obolo Local Government Area.
“The suspects were undertaking mining activities in Eastern Obolo without licenses. They were illegally mining ilmenite, locally known as black sand.

“They were apprehended while setting up mining equipment at a second location,” he said.
The EFCC spokesman said that the suspects would be charged to court upon conclusion of investigations.
