I SALUTE THE EARTH, SALUTE THE SKY
– Akeem Lasisi

I salute the earth, salute the sky
I salute the sky, salute the earth
I salute the ambiguous wind
That marries them in the mystic air.

The science of the rising night,
The magic of the setting sun:
The earth, ogeere,
Who tenders its head with a diligent hoe.

This earth,
My ties with you is tight.
I had cushioned your might with the blood of birth
Plus the umbilical cord as the tenement rite.

This earth,
Custodian of my father’s bones
The heir apparent
Of my fattening flesh.

I salute the earth, salute the sky
Salute the sky, salute the earth
I salute the ambiguous wind,
Marrying them in the mystic realm.
