Questions have emerged over the medical care available at National Youth Service Corps orientation camps following the reported death of Etimbuk Daniel, a former Students’ Union Government president of Akwa Ibom State University.
Daniel reportedly complained of a headache while attending an NYSC orientation camp in Enugu State.
According to reports, he received medication after developing the complaint, but his condition later deteriorated.
A statement attributed to the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) alleged that a doctor who reviewed the case identified the medication as fake.
The allegation has raised concerns about the quality of medicines administered to corps members and the medical procedures followed when they become ill.
However, the allegation requires independent medical verification, and the circumstances surrounding Daniel’s death should be established through a proper investigation.
The incident has renewed attention on the responsibility of NYSC camp authorities to ensure that corps members receive appropriate medical attention and that medicines supplied at camp clinics meet required safety standards.
Orientation camps bring together young graduates from different parts of the country for several weeks of activities.
Access to qualified medical personnel, properly stored medication and prompt referral to hospitals is therefore essential.
