The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has inaugurated its National Presidential Campaign Council and unveiled its national secretariat in Abuja as preparations intensify for the 2027 general elections.

The party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, used the occasion to outline plans to tackle corruption, insecurity, unemployment and poverty, promising emergency interventions in critical sectors if elected president.

Speaking at a dinner in Abuja, Obi said his proposed administration would prioritise accountability in public spending and focus on solving citizens’ problems rather than blaming previous governments.

He questioned the implementation of the 2023, 2024 and 2025 budgets, alleging that capital expenditure remained below 20 per cent and that contractors faced payment difficulties. He also challenged the Federal Government to account for its revenue, loans and completed projects.

On security, Obi promised a responsive approach to kidnapping and violent attacks. He also pledged an emergency in agriculture, particularly in northern Nigeria, arguing that improved security would enable farmers to return to their farms, increase food production and create jobs.

He identified education, healthcare and electricity as other priorities and called for free, fair and credible elections in 2027, describing the expected political change as “a revolution of the ballot”.

Obi is contesting the presidency alongside his running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, under the NDC platform. The party also presented certificates of return to candidates contesting various elective positions.

Earlier, NDC National Chairman Moses Cleopas said the inauguration was an important step in the party’s preparations. He urged candidates to remain accountable to voters and fulfil their campaign promises.

The party also unveiled its national secretariat at 393 Etang Obuli Crescent, Jabi, Abuja, following its Third National Executive Committee meeting. NDC National Leader Seriake Dickson described the facility as the party’s “Noah’s Ark” and a unifying centre for its activities.

The party announced that Dickson would chair the National Campaign Council, with Obi as co-chairman, Cleopas as vice-chairman and Kwankwaso as co-vice-chairman. Babachir Lawal, a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation and chairman of the National Campaign Advisory Council, would also serve as a member.

The NDC said the secretariat would support its administration, strategic planning and nationwide campaign coordination ahead of the 2027 elections.
