Nigerian actor and skit maker Debo Adedayo, popularly known as Mr Macaroni, has revealed that his family once considered sending him out of the country over threats he received during his activism.
In an interview with Wazobia FM, excerpts of which resurfaced online on Tuesday, Mr Macaroni said he faced serious threats during the #EndSARS movement, leaving his family worried about his safety.
He said his mother frequently called him in tears, while his family eventually considered flying him abroad.
“So, you know, End SARS came at risk to my life, threats here and there, serious threats. My family, no time, they were every time calling me, crying, ‘Debo, please. Debo, please.’ Every blessed time, my mother. Every blessed time. It was so bad they wanted to fly me out of the country. I said, ‘For what? I’m not running anywhere,’” he said.
Mr Macaroni also spoke about backlash from Nigerians over his comments on government issues, saying he sometimes felt that the people he sought to represent had turned against him.
He said the experience made him question his continued involvement in political discussions, particularly because he was not seeking personal benefits from his activism.
The actor added that although he continued speaking out, including during the 2023 election, he eventually decided to take a break from regularly commenting on political issues.
