An FRSC mobile court in Abuja has sentenced a motorist, Moses Omokaiye, to five days of community service for assaulting a marshal on duty.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), FCT Sector Command, secured the conviction following a series of traffic offences committed by the motorist.
The Corps Public Education Officer (CPEO), Mr Osondu Ohaeri, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday in Abuja.
He said the offences included using a mobile phone while driving, dangerous driving, assaulting a marshal on duty and absconding with an officer.
Ohaeri said Omokaiye was arraigned before Magistrate Abubakar Jega of the FRSC Mobile Court sitting at the FCT Sector Command on Wednesday, Sept. 23.
He said the court also fined the offender N300, 000 and suspended his driver’s licence for three months.
According to him, the judgment was delivered in accordance with Regulation 65 of the National Road Traffic Regulations (NRTR), 2012.
“The case arose from an incident at about 11 a.m. on the same day during a mobile court operation at the FCT Sector Command.
“According to the case report, the defendant attempted to evade arrest by absconding with the arresting marshal, an action that resulted in the charge of assaulting a marshal on duty,” he said.
Reacting, the Corps Marshal, Malam Shehu Mohammed, commended the judgment and reiterated that enforcement personnel performing their lawful duties must be treated with respect.
Mohammed said attempts to evade arrest,obstruct enforcement or assault a marshal would be dealt with in accordance with the law.
He urged motorists to desist from using mobile phones while driving and other dangerous practices that could endanger lives, adding that such offences would continue to attract appropriate enforcement action.
