Nigerian singer Fave has spoken about the double standards female artistes face in the music industry, saying they are often judged by their appearance rather than their talent and stage presence.
Fave made the remarks while discussing the experiences of female artistes on the Afropolitan podcast.
“We’re not measured by our talent or our stage presence or just the normal metric that you’re supposed to measure an artiste by. We’re measured by what we wear. If your tummy’s not flat, if your skin is…” she said.
The singer said conversations about female artistes often focus on their appearance and people’s sexual fantasies rather than their music.
According to her, female artistes are often required to do “10 times” more than their male counterparts to attract the same level of attention.
Fave also spoke about sexual advances female artistes face when trying to gain access to studios and key decision-makers in the industry.
She said some music executives had told her they were reluctant to sign female artistes because they considered them difficult to manage.
Fave called on major players in the industry to help break barriers and create a more supportive environment for female artistes.
