Nigeria’s Super Falcons are out of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) yesterday following a narrow 1-0 defeat to Cameroon in the quarter-finals.
A 19th-minute free-kick goal from Cameroon’s Myriam Nyadjou proved to be the winner, ending Nigeria’s title defense and denying them a spot in the semi-finals.
Cameroon struck in the 19th minute when Nyadjou curled a long-range free-kick past Chiamaka Nnadozie.
Nigeria created several chances through Uchenna Kanu and Esther Okoronkwo, but Cameroonian goalkeeper Michaely Bihina made crucial saves to hold onto the lead.
The defeat also means Nigeria missed out on automatic qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Despite the early exit, Nigeria remains the most successful team in African women’s football history having won 11x WAFCON Champions (1991, 1995, 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2010, 2014, 2016, 2018)
2x African Games Gold Medalists (2003, 2007)
A tough loss for the Super Falcons, but their status as the dominant force in African football history remains untouched with 11 continental titles to their name.
