The Osun State Police Command has said singer Davido was the target of an attack on the convoy of Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke on Wednesday, August 19.
Security escorts attached to the governor engaged unidentified men in a gun duel during Adeleke’s visit to the palace of the Ataoja of Osogbo, shortly after he received his certificate of return from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Davido and the governor’s children were in the convoy when the incident occurred, causing panic as the suspected gunmen allegedly opened fire on the convoy and the governor’s security personnel returned fire.
The spokesperson for the police command, Abiodun Ojelabi, said preliminary investigations revealed that members of the Eye Confraternity were allegedly after Davido.
He said an ex-convict and suspected thug, identified as Adebayo Taoreed, popularly known as “Small Rugged”, allegedly attempted to gain access to Davido but was resisted by members of the singer’s security team.
According to Ojelabi, the confrontation attracted other suspected gang members, who temporarily blocked the palace entrance and obstructed the movement of the governor’s convoy.
He said a 60-year-old man, Tajudeen Yusuf, was shot dead during the incident.
Ojelabi said Yusuf was found lying in a pool of blood at Itaolokan area of Osogbo and was rushed to the University Teaching Hospital, Osogbo, where he was pronounced dead.
The police command said it has commenced a full-scale investigation and intensified efforts to identify and apprehend the fleeing suspects.
