The Police Command in Ebonyi says it will commence strict enforcement of traffic laws to curb increasing violations and improve road safety.
The command’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Joshua Ukandu, disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday in Abakaliki.
Ukandu said the exercise followed concerns over the disregard for traffic regulations and basic road safety protocols by some motorists.
He said the enforcement was also in compliance with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police for immediate and sustained enforcement of traffic regulations nationwide.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Hope Urunwa Okafor, directed Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers and other relevant personnel to ensure compliance within their areas of responsibility.
“The command wishes to emphasise that no one is exempted from the enforcement exercise, including serving police officers and other security personnel.
“All road users are expected to comply fully with extant traffic regulations,” Okafor said.
She reminded motorists that failure to produce vehicle particulars and a valid driver’s licence when lawfully requested by a police officer constituted an offence.
Other violations include disobedience to traffic signs and signals, driving against traffic and using vehicles with defective or non-functional tail lights.
Okafor directed officers involved in the exercise to act professionally, courteously and with restraint while respecting the rights and dignity of members of the public.
She urged motorists and other road users to cooperate with law enforcement officers, stressing that the exercise was aimed at promoting responsible road use, reducing preventable crashes and improving safety across the state.
The CP urged all road users to obey traffic regulations, exercise caution and regard road safety as a shared responsibility.
