Canadian rapper Drake has pocketed $1 million after Canada secured a 1-0 victory over South Africa in their FIFA World Cup Round of 32 encounter on Sunday night.
The Toronto-born artist had staked $770,000 (more than N1 billion) on Canada to defeat South Africa, with the wager carrying a possible payout of $1,001,000. Following Canada’s win, the bet paid off, earning Drake an estimated profit of $231,000.
Before the match, Drake revealed that a message from South African DJ Black Coffee inspired the high-stakes wager.
“@realblackcoffee was chirping in the DM I had to raise the STAKES,” he wrote while sharing a screenshot of the bet.
Drake is widely known for placing public bets on major sporting events. Over the years, he has wagered on several competitions, including NBA Finals games, UFC championship bouts, boxing matches, and major football tournaments.
