The Catholic Diocese of Ogoja on Sunday honored Sen. Jarigbe Agom, representing Cross North Senatorial District at the Senate for his contributions towards the growth of the diocese.
The Bishop of diocese, Most Rev. Donatus Akpan, gave him the award during a thanksgiving mass by the senator held at the St. Benedict Catholic Cathedral, Ogoja.
“You have always come to our help in times of need. You have always been there for us.
“We appreciate all your contributions to the church hence we are giving you this award,” he said.
Earlier, in his sermon, Akpan urged leaders in the country to always remember the needy, adding that good leaders were known for the goods they did.
He said that people who found themselves in positions of authority should avoid discrimination while offering assistance to the less privileged.
“Let us not be selfish in doing good. We should avoid discrimination while helping the poor or doing good,” he said.
According to the bishop, God alone has the power and authority to make people what they are.
“So, when you see people suffering and you turn your eyes the other way, you are telling God that you cannot rule,” he added.
Responding, Sen. Agom expressed gratitude to the church for it’s support and prayers during his political travails.
He said that his battle was divinely won for the overall interest of the people of Cross River North Senatorial district.
“We have fought and won in the overall interest of the great people of Cross River North Senatorial district.
“We thank God Almighty for His divine help and protection throughout the course of this political battle for the liberation of our senatorial district,” he said.
The mass was attended by some National Assembly members as well as members of the state chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), including Sen. Liyel Imoke, among others.
