A Life Camp Chief Magistrates’ Court, Abuja, on Thursday sentenced a 35-year-old glass worker, Kingsley Emmanuel, to one month imprisonment for resisting lawful arrest.
The Magistrate, Hauwa Aboki, gave Emmanuel an option of N50,000 fine.
Aboki warned the defendant to shun crime and be a good citizen, expressing hope that the sentence would serve as a deterrent to others.
Emmanuel, a resident of Opposite Edumegu, Karmo, Abuja, had pleaded guilty to a charge of obstructing a police officer and resisting lawful arrest.
The Prosecutor, Mrs Charity Nwachukwu, told the court that on Sept. 9, at about 8:20 p.m., police officers attached to Karmo Division were on patrol at a criminal hideout in Karmo.
Nwachukwu said the officers arrested Emmanuel at the location but that he allegedly obstructed them and brought out his mobile phone to record himself and the officers while they were performing their lawful duties.
She added that the defendant’s action enabled other suspected criminals to escape and that he could not give a satisfactory account of his actions during police investigation.
The prosecutor said the offences contravened Sections 148 and 172 of the Penal Code.
