The overnight security vigil being kept across communities in Ogun and Lagos states appears to be threatening social distancing as the fight against coronavirus continues.
Due to attacks occasioned by lockdown, many people now mount vigils overnight.
This is happening in Ogun border areas such as Mowe, Ibafo, Magboro, Wawa and Lambe.
Affected areas in Lagos include Abule Egba, Agege and Iyana Ipaja.
As a result, the landlords and tenants parade their areas in groups, bearing defensive weapons like cutlasses.
Phenomenal.comng, however, observes that while this has become a daily occurrence, flocking in that manner is affecting distancing.
It was further discovered that the vigilante groups also sometimes sit in groups, sharing food and drinks also in a manner that provoke dangerous congregation.
Meanwhile, Lagos continues to lead in the number of coronavirus cases recorded in the country, while Ogun’s cases are also expanding in terms of local governments spread.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, through its verified Twitter account on Sunday, disclosed that the 86 new cases of COVID-19 were reported from seven states, 70 in Lagos, seven in FCT, three each in Katsina and Akwa Ibom, one each in Jigawa, Bauchi and Borno States.
The agency said that Nigeria had 436 active cases as at 11;50 p.m of April 19, 170 discharged so far, while 21 deaths had been recorded.
The breakdown of cases by state is: Lagos- 376, FCT- 88, Kano- 36, Osun- 20, Oyo- 16, Edo- 15, Ogun- 12, Kwara- 9, Katsina- 12, Bauchi- seven, Kaduna- six, Akwa Ibom- nine, Delta- four, Ekiti – three, Ondo – three, Enugu, Rivers, Niger and Jigawa have two each, while Borno, Benue and Anambra have one each.
NCDC said that one case previously reported in Kano had been transferred to Jigawa State.
“Therefore, the total number of confirmed cases in Kano is 36 as at April 19,” the NCDC said.
COVID-19 has spread to seven out of 20 local government areas of Ogun State.
The virus has spread to seven local government areas in the state.
As of Saturday, the state had recorded 12 COVID-19 cases with two new ones in the Odogbolu Local Government Area.
According to a diagram by the state Ministry of Health, the seven local government areas are Ipokia, Sagamu, Ewekoro, Yewa South, Obafemi-Owode, Odogbolu and Ikenne.
The diagram shows that Odogboolu has two; Ikenne three; Sagamu two; Obafemi-Owode one; Ewekoro two; Ipokia one and Yewa South one.
