Although members of the National Youth Corps Service (NYSC) who will be participating in the coming election process are eager to know how much they will earn at the end of the exercise, the independent electoral commission cannot yet tell them this because it has yet to make it official.
This was gathered last during a recent training programme organised by INEC for the NYSC members.
As the programme held across the country unfolded, phenomenal.com.ng observed that the ‘corpers’ wanted INEC officials present to tell them how much they would get after the election.
The officials, however, informed them that they could not yet tell them any specific figure because it had not been officially released.
The facilitators however urged the youth corps members to see the participation in the election as a national assignment to be discharged with seriousness and integrity.
“They also spoke to us on the issue of safety. They said that we should consider our safety first. They said that in case there is any chaos in our centres, the first thing is to run for cover.
“We really appreciate the way they trained us. In some places, there were drama sketches to demonstrate how to deal with voters. For instance, we learnt about how to handle aged voters and other special cases. But many of us were eager to know how much we will get. You know our allawee (allowance) is small and everyone is sensitive to matters of money. The officials said they themselves didn’t know how much we would be paid yet,” one of the participants said on condition of anonymity.
Efforts to reach INEC Spokesperson, Rotimi Oyekanmi, on the allowance had not yielded fruits as of the time of publishing this story, as a call put across to him did not go through.
