Chairman of the National Electoral Commission during the 1993 elections, Prof. Humphrey Nwosu, has advocated a return to two-party system as the country had then.
According to him, this is a solution to part of the challenges that the current electoral body is facing.
In an interview with Channels Television on, monitored on Thursday, Nwosu said the current structure in which 91 parties were contesting in the elections were unrealistic.
He said, “It doesn’t make sense to me. Some of the parties are sponsored by the big ones. Some of them withdraw because of lack of funds. Can they have structures in all the states? Can they have structures in all the local government areas? Can they have structures in all the 120,000 polling stations all over Nigeria?”
The professor, whose role during the June 12 presidential election annulled by the Babangida military regime remains controversial, regretted that Nigeria was not building on gains made in the past.
According to him, the two-party era, where the government introduced a little to the right, a little to the left ideology, encouraged people to join either based on how they felt and not on ethnicity or other sentiments.
