The name, Okokomaiko, has its roots in Hausa language, with ‘Okokomai’said to mean one bottle of palm oil.
Oral tradition revealed that the area was given to Hausa migrants by the Aworis of Iba town, about 400 years ago. The population of migrants grew and eventually one Suleman Jato, a Hausa native, was installed as the Baale. He later married a Yoruba woman from Awori extraction.
.As time went on, the place became known as Okokomaiko.
