CAN admonishes Nigerian leaders on sallah lessons

Abuja, June 6, 2025 (NAN) The Christian Association (CAN) in the 19 Northern States and the FCT has urged all Nigerians in positions of authority, particularly the political leadership, “to make a double sacrifice to secure Nigeria just as Muslims offer sacrifices in obedience to God during Sallah”.

The Chairman of the association, Rev. John Joseph Hayab, gave the advice in a Sallah message to the Muslim faithful as they join other parts of the world to celebrate Eid-el-Kabir.

“This season, which honours Prophet Ibrahim’s total obedience and willingness to sacrifice for the sake of God, is a timely call for both leaders and citizens to demonstrate renewed faith, unity, and responsibility towards our nation.

“In this spirit, Northern CAN encourages those in positions of authority, particularly the political leadership, to make a double sacrifice to secure Nigeria just as Muslims offer sacrifices in obedience to God during Sallah,” he said.

The further advised the political elite to act in consonance with their constitutional obligation and moral responsibility in the interest of every Nigerian.

“Our leaders must likewise act in obedience to their constitutional duty and moral responsibility to protect the lives and dignity of every Nigerian.

“The country is groaning under the weight of insecurity, economic distress, and social disillusionment.

“Nigerians are living in fear, and this climate of uncertainty is what gives room for enemies of peace to perpetrate evil without restraint.

“It is no longer enough to issue statements or make promises.

“The government must urgently remedy the conditions that have cast doubt on its commitment to the people.

“Let the leadership act decisively so that Nigerians will no longer have reasons to question or complain,” Hayab added.

According to him, the time has come for the Federal Government to take steps aimed at restoring public confidence and healing “our national wounds”.

“CAN calls on Nigerians to use this solemn period to pray for the peace and unity of the country, while also reaching out to the less privileged in the true spirit of Eid.

“We urge all religious and community leaders to continue fostering peaceful coexistence and to avoid making statements or taking actions capable of deepening our division.

The CAN chairman expressed warm greetings and heartfelt felicitations to the Muslim Ummah on the celebration of Eid-el-Kabir, as well as a joyful and spiritually rewarding Eid-el-Kabir.

Eid-el-Kabir: Governor approves Sallah bonus for civil servants, pensioners

Gov. Dauda Lawal of Zamfara has approved a special Sallah bonus for all civil servants and pensioners in the state.
This is contained in a statement signed by the state Commissioner for Information and Culture, Mahmud Dantawasa issued in Gusau on Monday.
 The timely gesture, the commissioner said, is a reflection of the governor’s deep commitment to the welfare and happiness of the people, especially during the sacred period of Eid-el-Kabir, a time of sharing, reflection, and prayer.
“The gesture is aimed at easing the financial burden on families and enable them to celebrate the festivities with joy and dignity.
“Gov Lawal, who is currently on pilgrimage to the Holy Land of Makkah, expressed his warmest wishes for a peaceful and joyous Eid celebration,” the commissioner said.
The governor in a statement said :, “I am deeply grateful to Almighty Allah for granting us the opportunity to witness yet another Eid-el-Kabir”
“As we celebrate Sallah, I urge us all to reflect on the essence of this season so such as unity, sacrifice, and compassion. Let us pray for our beloved Zamfara and our nation, Nigeria.
“Together, we can build a better future for ourselves and generations,” he said.
Lawal urged all citizens in the state to maintain law and order during the celebrations.
“My administration remains focused on delivering the dividends of democracy and ensuring that no one is left behind”, he assured
He therefore called on all residents to celebrate responsibly and to keep Zamfara in their prayers, especially for the continued peace, development, and prosperity of our dear state.
“May Almighty Allah accept our acts of worship and grant us peace, progress, and prosperity,” the governor added.

Salah’s bones are those of 19-year-old boy – Klopp

Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp believes Mohamed Salah still has the body of a young player even as the Egyptian grows wiser with experience.

Salah came off the bench to get Liverpool’s final goal in Thursday night’s 5-1 Europa League win over Toulouse, his 43rd European goal for the club – surpassing Thierry Henry’s tally of 42 for Arsenal as the most scored by any Premier League player for a single club in continental competition.

It came after the 31-year-old got both goals in Saturday’s 2-0 win over Everton, which meant that Salah has now scored or assisted in each of his last 13 Premier League games at Anfield.

Salah will aim to extend that run when Nottingham Forest visit on Sunday and Klopp is enjoying the spectacle of a maturing player with a more-rounded game, yet one who still has the physical attributes to match anyone.

“Off the pitch he behaves like a grown-up man but besides that he’s still a young player,” Klopp said. “He’s so fit. I think if we scan him the majority of the bones are probably 19 or 20 (years old) because he just keeps in such good shape.

“(He has) game understanding. That’s what we try to give young players. They all know an awful lot about football when they finish their career at 35 but the earlier you can get this information the more useful it is.”

Klopp admitted he had no idea that Salah had surpassed Henry’s European tally but, given the number of records the Egyptian has broken during his time at Anfield, it is not easy to keep up.

“Maybe he would have broken a few more records if I would be more into that because sometimes I left him out when he could have broken a record,” Klopp said. “It wasn’t intentional but I’m not too much into this.”

Klopp had made eight changes from the Merseyside derby for the visit of Toulouse, but will reverse most if not all of them on Sunday when Forest head to Anfield.

Liverpool go into the weekend three points off the top of the Premier League table and aiming to show they can balance a Europa League campaign with a title challenge at home.

“So far we could do it,” he said. “Thursday-Sunday is not great but it’s something we know really for long enough and that’s fine.

“The boys that didn’t play (against Toulouse) will have a proper training session so that’s good.

“If you play always the same team like we did in the past in the Champions League then it’s no training at all, it’s just recovery and then go again but so far we are able to do it like this with not too many injuries.” (dpa/NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Liverpool vs Chelsea: Sallah suffers drought. Fails to maintain 6-season feat of scoring in opening EPL games

Axel Diasi scored on his Premier League debut as Chelsea began their Premier League season with a draw against Liverpool in manager, Mauricio Pochettino’s first competitive game in charge.

The French defender, a  £38.8m buy from Monaco equalised for the Blues in the 37th minute after Luis Diaz had opened the scoring early for Liverpool.

Ben Chilwell and Mohamed Salah then saw their goals ruled out in the first half following video assistant referee checks.

Salah’s run of scoring on the Premier League’s opening day also came to an end after six consecutive seasons.

Despite half chances for Diaz and another debutant, Nicolas Jackson, neither side could capitalise on their opportunities and prevent a fifth consecutive draw between the sides.

Chelsea’s new manager Pochettino will have hoped to start his reign with a victory but there was plenty for him to be satisfied about as his new team recovered from a shaky start to deliver many encouraging signs.

Tinubu preaches love, compassion in Sallah message

The President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has urged Nigerians to imbibe love and compassion as the Ramadan comes to an end.

He notes in his Sallah message:’

We thank Munificent Allah for the grace to witness this year’s Eid-el-fitri celebration after the Holy Month of Ramadan.

For Muslims in our country and all over the world, Ramadan is a sacred spiritual obligation as one of the five pillars of Islam. With the help of Almighty Allah, we have gone through a period of abstinence, self-discipline, self-reflection, self-purification in gratitude and total submission to the will of Allah.
We have engaged in fervent prayers and supplications to Allah.

Beyond the self-abnegation and pious living that the fasting period imposed on us, the spiritual excercise we just concluded has also helped us to improve on our moral character, refine our minds in pursuit of higher ideals for which there should be no turning back.

At the heart of our faith and a major demand on all faithful is the requirement to commit ourselves to wholesome living. This entails love for one another, love for fellow humans regardless of creed, region and ethnicity, love for our communities and love for country.

To love one another, have compassion, empathy and love our beloved country means we must become better citizens in line with the teachings of Prophet Muhammed.

We must constantly seek to become a better version of ourselves in patriotism, dedication to duty and honesty. We must also never be weary of doing what is right, fair and just to all.

We are at the dawn of a Renewed Hope for a better, greater and a more prosperous Nigeria and I stand ready to walk with all Nigerians, young and old, male and female, with this opportunity to serve you in honour and dignity. This is a commitment that I have made and one in which we cannot afford to fail.

I wish all Muslims in Nigeria and beyond happy Sallah celebration.

Sallah: Only prayers can turn nation’s challenges around for better – clerics

Two Lagos-based Islamic clerics have urged Muslim faithful to pray fervently as only prayers can turned Nigeria challenges around for better.

The clerics spoke in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Saturday.

Mr Suleiman Lawal, a cleric of the Muslim Community in Ayobo, said that prayer remains the only perfect solution to overcome the crisis in the country.

Lawal said, “As we celebrate, let pray for Nigeria to surmount her present challenges and leaders to succeed in their efforts so as to make life more meaningful for its citizens.”

He admonished the faithful to use the festive period to forgive one another and tread the path of peace.

“Hold on to the tenets of Islam by loving, forgiving one another irrespective of religion, ethnic and political differences in the interest of unity and peace in the country.”

The cleric called on Nigerians to embrace peace in the forth coming general elections.

”As Nigeria prepares for election in February, peace not violence is needed to achieve togetherness in 2023 and beyond.”

Lawal called on the government to ensure that the fight against insecurity is totally won.

“Government should scale up measures to curb the spate of terrorism, kidnappings, killings and other crimes plaguing the nation and must be ready to protect lives and property of its citizens.”

He advised politicians to bury their political differences and tackle national issues with urgency.

While addressing the issue of corruption, Lawal appealed to the government to eliminate corruption and ensure that no offender is exempted.

He urged Nigerians to keep away from sins so as to enjoy God’s blessings and favour.

Lawal appealed to Nigerians to be patient, hopeful, expectant and put their trust in God to heal the land and the people.

The cleric encouraged the faithful to show love by reaching out to the less privileged in the society to enable them to live a comfortable life.

In the same vein, Mr Kamilu Omitogun, said that fervent prayers could help restore the glory of the nation.

He urged Muslims and Christians to live in peace and shun unpleasant actions, statements and utterances that might lead to the destruction of lives and property.

Omitogun urged Nigerians to embrace unity and be tolerance.

He said, “Let us guard against provocations that are capable of destroying the unity of the nation.

“Agitations for the nation to be divided should be dropped, we are better as one and must learn to live in peace with one another for the growth of the nation.”

Omitogun advised the leaders not to be intoxicated with power but govern with fear of Allah as God would surely ask them how they ran their affairs while in authority.

Makinde greets Muslims, pilgrims at Eid

Gov. Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has urged Muslim faithful in the state and the nation at large, to uphold religious tolerance and harmony at all times.

Makinde, in a congratulatory message to all Muslims on the celebration of Eid-el-Kabir, also known as the festival of sacrifice, urged them to reflect on the essence of the important festival.

According to a statement in Ibadan issued on Friday by Mr Taiwo Adisa, his Chief Press Secretary, Makinde admonished Muslim faithful to lay aside all forms of religious, ethnic and tribal sentiments.

This, the governor said was imperative in the interest of unity, peace, progress and prosperity of the state and the country at large.

Makinde said that with the Eid-el-Kabir, the Almighty Allah (SWT) “is teaching humanity about the virtues of total submission to His will and human beings must learn to put God first in all situations.”

He said: “The Eid-el-Kabir presents an opportunity for us to reflect on the faith, with which Ibrahim (Abraham) willingly agreed to sacrifice his only son and was set to let go of his prized asset, just in obedience to the command of Allah (SWT).”

Makinde also extended his congratulations to the state pilgrims, who are participating in the 2022 Hajj, wishing them a successful performance of their religious obligations and a safe return home.

He reiterated his administration’s commitment to the socioeconomic transformation and the infrastructure revolution of the state in line with the Roadmap for Accelerated Development of Oyo State, 2019-2023.

The governor pledged to continue to make life more meaningful for all residents of the state.

“On our part, we have undertaken to continue to make life more meaningful for the people of Oyo State, through policies and programmes that are godly and humane,” the governor said.

The Commissioner of Police in charge of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Babaji Sunday, has released the phone numbers to call in case of any security hitch during the Eid season and beyond.

He also directed worshippers to park their vehicles 200m away to the Eid prayer ground located on the Airport Road in Abuja.

This is contained in a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer in the FCT, DSP Josephine Adeh on Friday in Abuja.

`No vehicle will be permitted to park 200 meters close to praying grounds in all praying ground within the FCT.

“Worshipers and residents are therefore, advised to cooperate with Police officers, deployed strictly for enforcement,” he said.

He urged worshipers to pray inside the Eid praying ground and avoid praying on the expressway to ensure orderliness and proper traffic management.

Sunday said traffic would be diverted at Dantata Bridge, along the Airport Road from 7:00 to 10:00 am, adding that vehicles would not be allowed to park in front of the praying ground, both on the expressway and service lane..

He pledged a water-tight and all-inclusive security arrangement to protect residents ahead of the 2022 Eid-el-Kabir celebration.

Sunday said said the command has made all necessary security arrangements to protect residents and prevent any untoward situation.

The CP said plans were concluded to beef-up security by intensifying robust stop and search operations, high level visibility policing patrols and surveillance of places of worship, parks, recreational centres and residential areas.

“Plans have also been made to ensure prompt response to any distress calls from across the FCT, adding that command’s Tactical and Intelligence Assets had been strategically deployed.

“The deployment cuts across all the nooks and crannies of the FCT,” he said, adding that the idea was to nip in the bud, any crime or threat to lives and property of residents.

He reiterated the commitment of the command to work closely with other security agencies and residents to promote safety, peace and security in the FCT.

No exam on Sallah day – NECO

The National Examinations Council (NECO) says it has not scheduled any examination for July 9, contrary to insinuations in some quarters that it scheduled examination date on Eid-el-Kabir (Sallah) day.

The council stated this in a statement by the Head Information and Public Relations Division, Mr Azeez Sani and made available to newsmen in Abuja on Monday.

He said that the council was conscious of the importance of religious festivals and had as such, always made adequate provision for such in fixing examination dates.

“The council has given a whole examination free week, beginning from July 8, to July 13, in the ongoing Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) for school-based candidates.

“This is to enable Muslim faithful to have enough time to celebrate the festival,” he said.

It will be recalled that the 2022 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) for School based Candidates began on June 27, and will end on Aug.12. (

Gov. Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, has felicitated the Muslim Ummah in the state and across Nigeria, on the occasion of the Eid-el-Fitri festivities.
A statement issued on Sunday in Ibadan by Mr Taiwo Adisa, Chief Press Secretary to the governor, quoted Makinde as calling on the Muslims to sustain prayers for the state and its leaders.

He congratulated Muslim faithful on witnessing the end of the Ramadan and prayed that Allah would accept their worship.and keep them all alive and healthy to witness the next Ramadan.

The governor added, “though the Ramadan season is over, Muslim faithful must continue to practise the lessons that the Holy Month taught us all by remaining close to Allah SWT and submitting to His will.
“Residents of the state also should continue to pray for our government and support its programmes and policies, which are geared towards repositioning the state.

“I also want to charge them that though the Ramadan is over, their commitment to the ideals of prayers, selflessness and service should not wane, as these are values that can make our society a better place.
“Please, do not relent in your prayers for Oyo State and its leadership and your support for our administration.
