– Erling Haaland continued his jaw-dropping assault on the Premier League on Saturday as he netted a first-half brace to equal Mohamed Salah’s single-season goal-scoring record in Manchester City’s 3-1 victory over beleaguered Leicester City on Saturday.

– Haaland increased his haul to 32 goals to tie Salah’s mark for a 38-game season — and the 22-year-old Norwegian scoring machine has eight games still to play.

– Only four days earlier, Haaland had become the first player in English football to score a record 45 goals in a season in all competitions during City’s 3-0 win over Bayern Munich in the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal.

– Dean Smith has been named Leicester City manager until the end of the season.

– Smith, 52, left Norwich earlier this season after previous spells at Aston Villa and Brentford.

– Leicester are in huge trouble in the Premier League relegation zone following Saturday’s home defeat by Bournemouth.

– Leicester City have sacked manager Brendan Rodgers after Saturday’s 2-1 loss to Crystal Palace with the club’s board “compelled to take alternative action” to stay in the Premier League.

– Their fifth league defeat in six games dropped them into the relegation zone.

– Rodgers, appointed in February 2019, won Leicester’s first FA Cup in 2021.

– But chairman Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha said performances and results this season have been “below our shared expectations”.

– In a statement, he added: “It had been our belief that continuity and stability would be key to correcting our course, particularly given our previous achievements under Brendan’s management.

– “Regrettably, the desired improvement has not been forthcoming and, with 10 games of the season remaining, the board is compelled to take alternative action to protect our Premier League status.

– “The task ahead of us in our final 10 games is clear. We now need to come together – fans, players and staff – and show the poise, quality and fight to secure our position as a Premier League club.”

– Goals from Ben Chilwell, Kai Havertz and Mateo Kovacic helped Chelsea continued their upturn in form with a 3-1 win at Leicester City in the Premier League on Saturday.

– After a dismal run of two wins in 15 games, Graham Potter’s side have now won their last three matches in all competitions and are 10th in the league table with 37 points, while 16th-placed Leicester will now be looking over their shoulders with concern.

– High on confidence following wins over Leeds United and Borussia Dortmund, the visitors bossed the opening spell of the game and drew first blood in the 11th minute when Chilwell’s crisp left-footed volley beat goalkeeper Danny Ward at his near post.

– Chelsea were guilty of taking their foot off the gas after their opener, with forward Joao Felix losing possession in his own half in the 39th minute. The ball broke to forward Patson Daka, who fired his effort past Kepa Arrizabalaga to level the score.

– Leicester continued to press forward after the equaliser, but it was Chelsea who scored just before half time when Enzo Fernandez played Havertz through with a delicate chip, which the German lobbed over the head of Ward and into the net.

– The hosts did not let up in their intensity after the break and were denied an equaliser by a goalline clearance from substitute Conor Gallagher, before Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall miscued an effort from close range to let Chelsea off the hook.

– Chelsea made the most of their lifeline, as January signing Mykhailo Mudryk had a goal ruled out for offside before he turned provider for Kovacic, whose thumping volley sealed the three points for the London club in the 78th minute.

– Marcus Rashford scored twice to continue his hot streak and help Manchester United overcome Leicester in the Premier League.

– Rashford is in the form of his career and is leading United’s resurgence, taking his tally to 24 for the season with goals in each half at Old Trafford.

– Both efforts were clinical finishes, latching on to passes from Bruno Fernandes and Fred before bearing down on goal and coolly slotting past Danny Ward.

– Substitute Jadon Sancho finished off a fine team move to seal all three points for Erik ten Hag’s side, but it could have been a very different story.

– Leicester created the better chances when it was goalless and their failure to find a way past David de Gea proved extremely costly.

– The Spaniard made a stunning reflex save to deny Harvey Barnes from close range and kept out Kelechi Iheanacho’s diving header with another superb stop.

– Defeat ended Leicester’s three-game unbeaten run and an inconsistent season sees them remain in 14th place in the table.

– Leicester chairman Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha has cleared the club’s outstanding £194m debt to parent company King Power International (KPI).

– The club owed the amount in loans to KPI, which is owned by the Srivaddhanaprabha family.

– A debt-to-equity transfer to KPI was completed to relieve the club of its outstanding debts.

– Leicester said the move was evidence of “KPI’s commitment to supporting the club’s long-term sustainability”.

– “These loans have been provided by KPI to the club over the last four years to fund the construction of the club’s world-class new training ground at Seagrave and to continue to support the club’s investments into its squad and women’s football during the Covid-19 pandemic,” the club said in a statement.

– “Their conversion into equity serves to strengthen the club’s balance sheet, reduce its interest costs, and provide further evidence of KPI’s commitment to supporting the club’s long-term sustainability.”

– It is the second time a debt-to-equity transfer has been completed under the Srivaddhanaprabha family’s ownership, with £103m worth of debt relieved in 2013, and it ensures all existing shareholder investment in the club will not be carried forward as debt.

– Srivaddhanaprabha said: “Maintaining long-term stability is vital for sustainable growth and a fundamental principle that has always guided our investments in the club’s future.

– “We want to make sure we continue on that path from the strongest, most secure financial footing.”

– The Srivaddhanaprabha family took control of Leicester in 2010 and have overseen their rise from the Championship to the Premier League, their title success in 2016 and their FA Cup victory in 2021.

– “I believe with all my heart in Leicester City and what the club can achieve for our fans, our people and our communities – in Leicester, Thailand and around the world,” added Srivaddhanaprabha.

– “The faith they continue to place in us to run their club responsibly with ambition and integrity guides our decision making and remains vital to us building on one of the most successful eras in the club’s history.”

– Kelechi Iheanacho’s fortuitous second-half strike broke the resistance of League Two Walsall and sent Leicester into the FA Cup fifth round.

– After Youri Tielemans had missed a penalty on a testing afternoon for a strong Foxes side, Iheanacho’s effort from the edge of the box deflected off Brandon Comley and looped over Saddlers goalkeeper Owen Evans in the 68th minute.

– It was the Nigeria international’s 17th goal in 23 FA Cup appearances – the most by any player since Iheanacho made his debut in the competition in 2016.

– Walsall, one of the form sides in League Two, had defended admirably against the 2021 Cup winners, cheered on by a capacity crowd at a sold-out Bescot Stadium.

– Evans made a series of smart saves while Tielemans struck the post with his spot-kick moments after half-time, after Patson Daka was fouled by Isaac Hutchinson.

– A point-blank stop from Evans denied Iheanacho a second in the final 10 minutes and kept an entertaining tie alive until the finish, but Leicester held firm for a much-needed Cup win amid their struggles in the Premier League.

– Newcastle’s dream season continued as Dan Burn and Joelinton fired them into the Carabao Cup semi-finals with victory over Leicester.

– The Magpies, who sit third in the Premier League and are hunting a first trophy in more than 50 years, did not let a fervent and expectant St James’ Park down.

– Eddie Howe’s side wasted a host of chances before defender Burn popped up in the box and slotted a shot into the bottom corner, his first goal for the team he has supported all his life.

– Joelinton, who set up that goal, then coolly netted from Miguel Almiron’s incisive pass to wrap up the victory.

– A 5-0 win would not have flattered the Magpies, with Joelinton hitting the post and Sean Longstaff missing several chances.

– Substitute Jamie Vardy missed two glorious chances to get Leicester back into the game but their performance merited nothing.

– It was another miserable night for Brendan Rodgers’ side, who have only beaten MK Dons and Gillingham since the break in their season in November.

– Fulham continued their fine form as Aleksandar Mitrovic’s first-half finish was enough to see off Leicester City at the King Power Stadium.

– The striker chested down Willian’s cross before firing home from close range in the 17th minute to help the Cottagers win their third successive match since the Premier League returned after the World Cup break.

– Leicester almost levelled through Youri Tielemans, who smashed an 80th-minute effort against the crossbar.

– Ayoze Perez also went close for the Foxes, failing to convert a Tielemans cross, while Fulham keeper Bernd Leno made an important stop to deny Harvey Barnes.

– Leicester, who were greeted with boos at the full-time whistle, fell to a third defeat on the bounce and remain three points above the bottom three in 13th.
